From hot desks at Blyth Workspace on the quayside to free WiFi at Blyth Library and laptop-friendly cafes and pubs, here's where to work remotely in Blyth.

Blyth.live·

Working from home suits most days, but sometimes the kitchen table loses its charm. You need a change of scene, a proper desk for a video call, or simply the background hum of other people to keep you going. Blyth doesn't have a big-city coworking scene, but it has something arguably better for a town of its size: a genuine managed workspace with hot desks on the quayside, a well-equipped library in the town centre, and a handful of cafes and pubs where a laptop and a coffee go together comfortably. Here's where to set up.

Blyth Workspace

If you want a real desk rather than a cafe table, Blyth Workspace at Commissioners Quay on Quay Road is the answer. Run by Advance Northumberland, the county council's regeneration company, it's a four-storey building of serviced offices overlooking the harbour, and it offers hot desk co-working space alongside its private offices.

Advance Northumberland lists hot desks across its workspaces at £15 a day at the time of writing, available Monday to Friday, 9am to 4.30pm (not weekends or bank holidays), with fast fibre internet, printing and complimentary refreshments. Book ahead by phone or email rather than turning up, and ask about a tour if you're weighing up something more regular.

There are also two bookable meeting rooms, including a ground-floor conference space for up to 24 people and a smaller "beach hut" room for up to 16, both with presentation screens and wireless internet. Free parking, including rapid EV charging points, makes it easy to reach from the wider Blyth area. Best for: A proper desk, fast fibre, meeting rooms and harbour views, the closest thing Blyth has to coworking.

Blyth Library

For free, quiet working space, Blyth Library on Bridge Street is hard to beat. There's WiFi, public PCs with internet access and Microsoft Office, and both colour and black-and-white printing and photocopying (A4 and A3), plus a scanner attached to a public PC. That makes it a handy fallback when you need to print a contract or scan a form without a trip elsewhere.

Opening hours are Monday 9am to 7pm, Tuesday to Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturday 9.30am to 12.30pm, closed on Sundays. The late Monday finish is useful for anyone squeezing in an evening session. Bear in mind the public PCs switch off 15 minutes before closing. There's no cafe and no pressure to spend anything, which is exactly the point.

Best for: Free WiFi, PCs and printing in the town centre, with a late opening on Mondays.

Commissioners Quay Inn

Right next door to Blyth Workspace, the Commissioners Quay Inn is the natural place to take your laptop when you want views and a menu. The waterfront inn lists free WiFi among its amenities and serves food all day, every day, so you can stretch a coffee into lunch while watching the boats on the River Blyth.

It's a hotel and restaurant first, so pick quieter mid-morning or mid-afternoon slots rather than peak lunchtime or a busy Sunday carvery. For an informal client catch-up, the harbour setting does a lot of the work for you.

Best for: Free WiFi, all-day food and harbour views, ideal for a working lunch.

The Wallaw

The Wallaw, Blyth's Wetherspoon in the restored former Wallaw Cinema on Union Street, opens at 8am every day, earlier than most of the town's cafes. WiFi is listed among its facilities, coffee comes at the group's usual low prices, and the big, open interior means you rarely feel you're hogging a table during the morning.

It gets busier and louder from lunchtime and into the evening, so it works best as an early-start office. Get your focused work done before noon, then pack up as the lunchtime crowd arrives.

Best for: Early opening, WiFi and cheap coffee, best before the lunchtime rush.

Doppio's Coffee House

For the best coffee to work by, Doppio's Coffee House on Waterloo Road is the pick. The family-run Italian coffee house is bright, clean and comfortable, and the food menu of homemade scones, bagels, open sandwiches and cakes means you can stay fuelled through a morning session.

It's a small, popular cafe, so it suits an hour or two with a laptop rather than a full day, and it's kind to give up your table when the lunchtime queue builds. It's generally open from the morning to mid-afternoon and closed on Sundays.

Best for: Excellent coffee and homemade food for a short, well-fuelled work session.

Frameworks Art Cafe

Frameworks Art Cafe on Bridge Street is a calmer alternative, a cafe inside an independent art and framing shop with local artwork on the walls. The coffee shop is open Monday to Saturday, 9am to 4.30pm, serving homemade hot and cold food and afternoon tea.

It's best suited to reading, writing or planning rather than back-to-back calls, and it sits just along Bridge Street from the library if you want to split your day between the two.

Best for: A calm, creative setting for reading and writing, close to the library.

Costa Coffee

If you're out at the shops anyway, Costa Coffee at Blyth Valley Retail Park is a familiar, predictable option with easy parking. It's more of a convenience stop than a destination, but handy for an hour of emails between errands. For more independent options around town, see our guide to the best cafes in Blyth.

Best for: Easy parking and a familiar menu for an hour of emails while out shopping.

A remote worker's day in Blyth

Start early at The Wallaw with a coffee and a clear inbox (8am). Head to Blyth Library on Bridge Street for a quiet, free stretch of focused work, printing anything you need (10am). Grab a late lunch and a proper coffee at Doppio's on Waterloo Road. If you've a call or a meeting to host, book a hot desk or the beach hut meeting room at Blyth Workspace and finish the day with harbour views at the Commissioners Quay Inn next door.
