Schools & Education in Blyth

Blyth reorganised its schools into a two-tier system in 2009, replacing the old first, middle, and high structure with primary and secondary schools. Here is how education works across the town today.

How It Works

Blyth's Two-Tier System

Blyth moved from a three-tier to a two-tier system in 2009 when its middle schools closed. Children now attend primary school to Year 6 before moving to secondary school at age 11.

Ages 3–11

Primary School

Nursery – Year 6

Primary schools take children from the nursery year to Year 6. Blyth's primaries include Malvin's Close and Croftway academies — both rated Outstanding — plus Newsham, New Delaval, and St Wilfrid's Catholic.

Ages 11–18

Secondary School

Year 7 – Year 13

The Blyth Academy serves ages 11–16, while Bede Academy is an all-through school running from age 3 to 18 with its own sixth form. Both give Blyth families a choice of secondary provision.
