Best Butchers in Blyth
Shy's (since 1860), Signature Farm Meats, and The Fat Butcher — independent butchers in Blyth.
Blyth has three independent butchers, each with a different character. One has been in the town centre since the 1860s. Another is a modern farm-to-counter operation with its own salt ageing room. The third is a popular shop in Bebside known for quality meat at good value. Between them, there is no reason to settle for supermarket meat in this part of Northumberland.
Shy's Family Butchers
Shy's Family Butchers at 50 Waterloo Road (NE24 1DH) is the oldest butcher in Blyth by a wide margin. This family-run pork butcher has been in the heart of the town centre since 1860, making it one of the longest-established independent shops in the whole of Northumberland.
The range goes well beyond pork, though that remains the specialty. Shy's offers a wide selection of meats alongside homemade pies and pasties, sandwiches, and fresh eggs. There is also a second shop on Church Street (NE24 1BG), so you have two locations to choose from depending on which part of town you are in.
Phone: 01670 361326.
Best for: Family pork butcher since 1860, homemade pies and pasties, two Blyth locations.
Signature Farm Meats
Signature Farm Meats at 549 Cowpen Road (NE24 4JF) is the most interesting butcher in Blyth from a food quality perspective. Run by two brothers, this family operation rears its own cattle on a smallholding, butchers the meat in-house, and dry-ages it in a Himalayan salt ageing room. That level of control from farm to counter is rare for a local butcher.
The result is meat with a depth of flavour you will not find in a supermarket. They also make their own sausages and burgers on site. Signature Farm Meats is on Cowpen Road on the edge of town, so you will need to drive or take the bus, but the quality makes the trip worthwhile.
Phone: 01670 209924.
Best for: Own-reared cattle, Himalayan salt dry-ageing room, in-house sausages, family-run.
The Fat Butcher
The Fat Butcher on Front Street in Bebside (NE24 4HW) has built a strong local following for high-quality meat at good value, particularly for bulk purchases. If you are buying for a family or stocking up the freezer, this is the place to come.
The shop is open seven days a week, which is unusual for an independent butcher and makes it a convenient option for weekend shopping. It sits on Front Street in Bebside, a short drive from Blyth town centre.
Open Monday to Saturday 9am to 6pm, Sunday 10am to 4pm. Phone: 01670 530885.
Best for: Quality meat at good value, ideal for bulk buys, open seven days a week in Bebside.
