Best Fish and Chips in Blyth

A Jay Rayner-approved seafront restaurant and a no-frills chippy with the best chips in town. Two ways to get fish and chips in Blyth.

Blyth.live·

There's no shortage of places to get fish and chips along the Northumberland coast, but Blyth has two that are genuinely worth knowing about. One has been recognised nationally as a destination in its own right; the other is a proper neighbourhood chippy that's earned a devoted local following through sheer consistency and value. Between them, they cover everything from a sit-down meal with a sea view to a Friday night takeaway wrapped in paper.

Here's our guide to the best fish and chips in Blyth.

Coastline Fish and Chip Restaurant

Coastline on Links Road, by the Mermaid Car Park (NE24 3PL), is the one that people travel for. Family-run for over 25 years, it's built a reputation that extends well beyond Blyth -- the Observer's Jay Rayner described it as a "national treasure", and that's not the kind of praise that gets handed out lightly.

The restaurant sits close to the beach, with free parking at the Mermaid Car Park right alongside. Inside, it's a proper sit-down fish and chip restaurant -- not a chippy with a few tables, but a full dining experience with table service, a licensed bar, and a menu that goes beyond the basics while never losing sight of what it does best.

The fish is beautifully fresh, the batter is light and crisp, and the chips are the proper thick-cut variety that a good fish supper demands. The portions are generous without being absurd, and everything tastes like it's been cooked with care rather than hauled out of a fryer on autopilot.

There's a takeaway counter as well, so you can grab your order and eat it on the beach if the weather's kind. On a warm evening, sitting on the dunes with a bag of Coastline's chips and the sound of the waves is one of the simplest and best things you can do in Blyth.

Best for: Family-run for 25 years, praised by Jay Rayner as a "national treasure". Sit-down restaurant and takeaway, close to the beach with free parking at the Mermaid Car Park.

Broadway Chippy

Broadway Chippy at 8 Broadway Circle (NE24 2LU) is a different proposition entirely -- and none the worse for it. This is a traditional takeaway chippy, the kind that every neighbourhood needs and few get quite right. Broadway Chippy gets it right.

The chips are the star here. Regulars will tell you they're the best in the area, and it's hard to argue once you've tried them -- golden, well-seasoned, and cooked so that the outside has a proper crunch while the inside stays fluffy. The batter on the fish isn't quite as delicate as Coastline's -- it's a thicker, more traditional coating -- but it's satisfying in its own way, and the overall package represents excellent value for money.

This is the chippy you go to on a Friday evening when you want something reliable, quick, and genuinely good without any fuss. The queue on a Friday night tells you everything you need to know about how the locals rate it.

Best for: Traditional takeaway chippy with a devoted local following. "Best chips in the area" according to reviews, and outstanding value for money.

Tips for Getting the Best Fish and Chips in Blyth

Timing matters. Both places are busiest on Friday and Saturday evenings -- if you're heading to Coastline for a sit-down meal, booking ahead is wise at weekends. Broadway Chippy can have a queue out the door on a Friday teatime, so either go early (before 5:30pm) or be prepared to wait.

Eat in or take to the beach? If you're at Coastline, the restaurant is well worth sitting down in -- it's a proper meal out. But on a fine day, the takeaway option lets you eat on South Beach, which is only a short walk away. Broadway Chippy is takeaway only, so plan accordingly.

Don't forget the extras. Mushy peas, curry sauce, and a bread roll -- the holy trinity of chippy accompaniments in the North East. Both places do them well.
