Christmas Trees in Blyth: Where to Buy and Recycle
Where to buy a real Christmas tree from Blyth, from the Seaton Delaval tree yard to a garden centre and a cut-your-own farm near Morpeth, plus tree care and recycling at Bebside in January.
Blyth doesn't have a Christmas tree farm of its own, but there is a specialist tree yard ten minutes down the road at Seaton Delaval, and a garden centre and a cut-your-own farm on the Morpeth side. This guide covers where to buy, how to keep a tree looking good until Twelfth Night, and how to get rid of it in January, when Northumberland's garden-waste bins are not being collected.
Seasonal sellers set their dates each autumn. Where a 2026 date has been published we give it. Where it hasn't, we say when the seller usually opens, so check before you set off.
Where to buy a real tree
Edelweiss Christmas Tree Co., Seaton Delaval
Edelweiss Christmas Tree Co. on Double Row at Seaton Delaval is the closest specialist seller to Blyth, around 10 minutes' drive south. It is a seasonal yard selling cut and living trees, including its top-grade Emerald trees, as well as garlands and wreaths. It also sells tree foliage by the kilo if you want to make your own wreath.
The yard usually opens in the last week of November and has sold out before Christmas week in past years, so don't leave it too late. Very large trees have needed ordering in advance. Dates and hours are announced on its Instagram page each year.
Dobbies Heighley Gate
Dobbies at Heighley Gate, on the A697 just north of Morpeth, is about 20 minutes from Blyth. It sells fresh-cut and pot-grown trees alongside stands, lights and decorations, so you can do it all in one trip, and there is a large free car park and a restaurant. Dobbies usually starts selling pot-grown trees from late October and cut trees from late November. Check the store page for current stock and hours.
Christmas Trees at Meldon Park
For a day out, Christmas Trees at Meldon Park near Meldon, west of Morpeth, lets you cut your own Norway spruce. It is around 25 minutes from Blyth. You collect a saw, choose a tree in the plantation, cut it, then have it wrapped and pay. There are also pre-cut Nordmann firs and pot-grown Norway spruce, and returning a pot-grown tree after Christmas earns a voucher towards next year's. The farm has traded for more than 30 years and usually opens from mid to late November, Thursday to Sunday. Check its website for dates, and bring gloves and boots.
Choosing and caring for your tree
Nordmann or Norway spruce? The Nordmann fir is the safe choice for a centrally heated house, with soft, glossy needles that stay on well. The Norway spruce is the traditional tree, with a stronger scent and a lower price, but it drops needles sooner, so it is best bought nearer Christmas.
Check it is fresh. Needles should bend rather than snap, and a gentle shake should not bring many down.
Water it daily. Forestry England recommends sawing a little over a centimetre off the base of the trunk at home and putting the tree straight into water. Use a stand with a good reservoir, top it up every day, and use plain water with no additives.
Keep it cool. Stand the tree well away from radiators, fires and stoves.
Living trees sold in pots need a cool spot, plenty of water and as short a time indoors as you can manage. Kept in a large pot or planted out, they can be brought back in next year.
Recycling your tree in January
Northumberland County Council's garden waste service is a paid subscription with 20 collections a year from March to November. The council's garden waste page says there are no collections from December to February, so the brown bin isn't an option in January.
Real trees can be taken to a household waste recovery centre as garden waste. Take off every light, decoration, bit of tinsel and string, and remove the stand first. The nearest centre to Blyth is:
- Bebside HWRC, Front Street, Blyth, NE24 4HN. Open seven days a week, 8am to 6pm from November to March.
Centres are for Northumberland residents only, with ID checked, and vans and trailers need a permit. There is no access on foot, and all sites close on Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Details for every site are on the council's household waste recovery centres page, or phone 0345 600 6400.
In past years the council has also set up extra tree drop-off points after Christmas. No arrangements had been published for January 2027 when we wrote this, so check the council website in December.
Artificial trees
If an artificial tree still works but you are replacing it, a charity shop or community group may be glad of it.
