Blyth Bids for £20,000 Let's Celebrate Towns Prize to Fund More Town Centre Events

Blyth Town Council has entered the Visa and Nationwide Let's Celebrate Towns competition, hoping to win £20,000 to pay for more town centre events and bring under-used spaces back to life.

Blyth could get extra money for town centre events if a bid by Blyth Town Council succeeds. The council has entered Let's Celebrate Towns, a national competition with a £20,000 prize, and says the money would go towards more events and activities in the town centre.

That matters for anyone who uses the town centre. The council's case is that events bring people into town, and more people means more trade for local shops, cafés and market traders while the bigger regeneration projects are still being built.

What the Money Would Pay For

The council announced the bid on 22 October. It says the prize would help pay for more town centre events and activities, bring under-used spaces back to life, attract more visitors and keep things moving while regeneration is under way.

The bid points to what the council's events programme has already done, working with Northumberland County Council, local businesses and community groups. Examples include the Playshapes artwork, which drew around 1,000 visitors, a record-breaking Town Carnival involving 25 community groups, and the launch of Nerdfest, which was inspired by a local gaming business. Wheels Week, community exhibitions and accessible cinema screenings are also part of the programme.

About the Competition

Visa and Nationwide run Let's Celebrate Towns together. This year it offers five £20,000 grants for community projects in towns with populations of between 5,000 and 225,000. There is one grant in each of five categories: High Street Revival, Backing Local Business, Protecting Valued Places, Connected Places and Community Pride. Entries closed on 25 October 2026, and the winners will be invited to an awards ceremony at the Houses of Parliament. The organisers have not yet said when the winners will be announced.

The Bigger Picture

The bid sits alongside the £95 million Energising Blyth regeneration programme, which includes the Market Pavilion and plans for a new university on the former Keel Row Shopping Centre site, where work on the Energy Central Institute is under way.
