Halloween in Blyth

Halloween on the Northumberland coast means pumpkins on doorsteps, a chilly walk along Blyth Beach and something spooky going on somewhere every weekend. Here is what tends to run in and around Blyth. Dates change every year, so always check each venue for this year's programme and to book.

Blyth's trick-or-treat trail

In recent years Blyth has hosted a community trick-or-treat trail in the run-up to Halloween, usually in the week before the 31st, with families following a route between taking-part shops, businesses and community spaces around the town centre and market area. It is a gentle, daytime way for younger children to join in without knocking on strangers' doors. Look out for details from the town team and local groups as October approaches, and check the current date and route before setting off.

Closer to home, the streets around Ridley Park and the town centre are popular for door-to-door trick-or-treating. Stick to houses with a pumpkin or a light showing, keep to well-lit streets and go in a group.

The Blyth fireworks display

Blyth traditionally marks the end of October with a fireworks display, usually held around Halloween and Bonfire Night rather than tied to a single fixed date each year. Recent displays have been staged on open ground near the Quayside and seafront, giving a big, crowd-friendly show against the dark of the coast. Wrap up warmly, allow time to park and check this year's date, start time and location before you head out, as the venue can move from one year to the next.

Family Halloween nearby

For a bigger day out, two National Trust properties within easy reach run substantial family Halloween programmes over the October half term. Seaton Delaval Hall, just down the coast, has hosted its "Tales from the Shadows" trail and family activities, while Gibside near Rowlands Gill runs a popular Halloween trail through its woodland and grounds. Both get busy at half term, so book ahead and check age guidance, as some events lean gently spooky and others are aimed at older children.
