Blyth's Seafront Cycling and Walking Route Gets the Go-Ahead
A segregated walking, wheeling and cycling route linking Blyth to the North Tyneside coast has been approved, connecting to town-centre works via Bondicar Terrace.
Getting to the coast on foot or by bike from Blyth is set to become safer. Northumberland County Council has given the go-ahead to the A193 Seafront Active Travel scheme — a segregated route for walking, wheeling and cycling running south from Blyth along the coast to Old Hartley, where it meets North Tyneside's own seafront route.
For Blyth, the important part is where the route joins the town. The A193 scheme runs between Kingsway and Old Hartley, and connects to the ongoing improvement works on Bondicar Terrace to the north — which in turn link onwards to Blyth town centre. In other words, this is not a route that starts somewhere else and passes Blyth by; it plugs directly into paths that lead back into the heart of the town.
What it means for Blyth residents
The council says the scheme will provide segregated space for walking, cycling and wheeling, along with improved crossing points and upgraded bus stops. The stated aim is better access to schools, employment areas and coastal destinations for both residents and visitors.
Best for:
For Blyth families, that means a continuous, protected route from the town centre out to South Beach and on down the coast — rather than sharing the road with traffic on the seafront.
For anyone in Blyth who cycles or walks to work, to school, or simply out to the beach, a segregated corridor separated from traffic is a meaningful change to a route many use every day.
The cost has risen
The approval came with a caveat: the price tag has jumped from an initial £9.7m to £13.5m. The council attributes the increase to "updated construction cost assumptions" reflecting current market conditions, plus added costs from detailed design work. Most of the bill is being met by the North East Strategic Mayoral Authority rather than local council budgets.
Full details of the cost increase are reported by the Northumberland Gazette.
