Blyth Market: Your Guide to Market Days

Wednesday car boot, Friday and Saturday traditional market, plus the Jam Jar Cinema in the Market Pavilion. Everything you need to know about Blyth Market.

Blyth.live·

Blyth has had a market for centuries, and the tradition shows no sign of fading. Three days a week, Market Street comes alive with stalls set out in front of the shops, selling everything from fresh fruit and veg to clothing, household goods, and the kind of odds and ends you didn't know you needed until you spotted them on a trestle table. It's a proper Northumberland market town experience, and one of the things that gives Blyth's centre its character.

Here's your guide to market days in Blyth.

When and Where

The market takes place on Market Street, right in the heart of Blyth town centre (NE24 1DP). Stalls are set up in front of the shops, creating a bustling, walkable stretch that draws shoppers from across the area.

There are three market days each week:

  • Wednesday from 9am -- car boot and flea market, with a mix of second-hand goods, collectibles, and bargain finds
  • Friday from 9am to 3:30pm -- traditional market with a full range of stalls
  • Saturday from 9am to 3:30pm -- traditional market, usually the busiest day

Best for: Three market days a week: Wednesday (car boot and flea market), Friday and Saturday (traditional market, 9am--3:30pm).

What's on Offer

The Friday and Saturday markets are traditional affairs -- the kind of market your grandparents would recognise. Expect stalls selling fresh produce, fruit and vegetables, meat, fish, clothing, fabrics, household goods, cleaning products, tools, and seasonal items. There's a good mix of regular traders who've been coming for years and newer faces trying their hand.

The Wednesday car boot and flea market has a different feel -- more informal, with second-hand goods, bric-a-brac, vintage items, and the occasional genuine find. It's worth a rummage if you enjoy that sort of thing, and prices are generally very fair.

The Market Pavilion

One of the most interesting developments in Blyth's town centre in recent years is the Market Pavilion, a newer building on the site of the former cinema and music hall. It's become a real focal point for the area, housing a mix of creative and community uses that complement the market nicely.

The standout tenant is the Jam Jar Cinema, an independent cinema with three screens showing a mix of mainstream releases, independent films, and special screenings. It's a brilliant addition to Blyth -- the kind of venue that towns of this size rarely get, and one that's well worth supporting.

Alongside the cinema, the Pavilion houses a cafe, event studios, and creative spaces used by local artists and community groups. The whole building has a modern, welcoming feel that sits well alongside the traditional market stalls outside.

Best for: The Market Pavilion houses the Jam Jar Cinema (three screens), a cafe, event studios, and creative spaces -- all on the site of the former cinema and music hall.

A Bit of History

Markets have been part of Blyth's identity for centuries. The town's position as a port and trading hub meant that markets were a natural part of its commercial life, and the tradition has continued even as the town has changed around it. Market Street itself is named for the trade that's been carried out there for generations.

Today's market is smaller than it once was -- that's true of markets across the North East -- but it remains a genuine community gathering point and a reason to come into town rather than ordering online. There's something to be said for picking up your vegetables from someone who can tell you where they were grown.

Tips for Visitors

Arrive early on Saturday mornings if you want the best selection -- it's the busiest market day and popular stalls can sell out. The Wednesday car boot market is more relaxed, and you can usually browse at your own pace. There's free parking nearby with a parking disc (see our guide to parking in Blyth for details), and plenty of cafes and shops on the surrounding streets for a post-market coffee.
