Blyth Beach: The Complete Guide
Sandy beach, colourful beach huts, a surf school, and free parking. Everything you need to know about Blyth's South Beach.
Blyth Beach is one of the best stretches of sand on the Northumberland coast, and it remains one of the least crowded. A wide sandy beach runs from the harbour mouth down towards Seaton Sluice, backed by dunes, a paved promenade, and those colourful beach huts that have become the town's unofficial emblem. Here's everything you need to know.
South Beach
South Beach is the main attraction. It's a broad expanse of firm golden sand, ideal for sandcastles, football, or simply spreading out without feeling hemmed in. The promenade runs along the top and is excellent for pushchairs and wheelchairs. At the southern end, a children's play area with climbing equipment and swings keeps younger ones busy when they've had enough of the sand.
The amenity building provides public toilets and outdoor showers -- a small thing, but it makes a real difference when you've got sandy children and a long drive home.
Best for: Wide sandy beach, paved promenade, children's play area, toilets and showers at the amenity building.
Beach Huts
Blyth's colourful beach huts have become one of the most photographed spots in Northumberland. Lined up along the promenade near South Beach, they're available to rent through Northumberland County Council.
The good news is that Blyth is significantly more affordable than beach hut locations further south. Annual rents are a fraction of what you'd pay in Dorset, Norfolk, or Whitby. Availability is managed through a waiting list, so register your interest early. Day hire is sometimes available in summer -- check the council website for current rates.
Best for: Beach huts available to rent from Northumberland County Council -- significantly cheaper than most UK coastal locations.
Surf School
Blyth is a proper surf spot. The beach faces east into the North Sea and picks up consistent swell, particularly from autumn through spring. Blyth Surf School operates from South Beach with lessons for beginners and improvers, all equipment provided including wetsuits.
Group lessons suit first-timers, and the school runs sessions for children as well as adults. The beach break here is relatively forgiving, making it a sensible place to learn.
Best for: Blyth Surf School at South Beach -- group and individual lessons, all equipment provided, suitable for beginners.
Swimming and Water Quality
Water quality at Blyth Beach is regularly tested during the bathing season. Seasonal lifeguards patrol a designated section of South Beach from late May through September -- swim between the red and yellow flags when they're present.
The beach shelves gradually, making it relatively safe for paddling with children, but always keep an eye on smaller ones. Water temperatures peak around 14-15 degrees in August -- bracing, but manageable with a short wetsuit.
Dog Rules
Dogs are welcome on much of Blyth Beach, but seasonal restrictions apply to the main bathing area around South Beach, typically from May to September. The restricted zone is clearly signed.
Outside the restricted zone and outside summer, dogs can run freely. The wide, firm sand north of the main beach area is ideal for longer walks.
Wildlife
Grey seals are regularly seen in the waters off the beach and around the harbour mouth -- they'll sometimes pop up surprisingly close to shore. Bottlenose dolphins are spotted several times a year, usually in the warmer months. Early morning and late afternoon offer the best chances.
The dunes support wildflowers and butterflies in summer, while rocky outcrops attract wading birds including turnstones and oystercatchers in winter.
Best for: Grey seals regularly seen from the beach. Dolphins spotted several times a year -- early morning and late afternoon offer the best chances.
Getting There
By train: The reopening of Newsham station on the Northumberland Line has transformed access to Blyth. Trains run from Newcastle Central to Newsham in under 20 minutes, with regular services throughout the day. From Newsham station, it's about a mile to South Beach -- walkable in 20 minutes, or a short bus ride.
By car: Blyth is about 13 miles north-east of Newcastle, roughly 25 minutes via the A189 Spine Road. Two free car parks serve the beach directly:
- Mermaid Car Park -- at the northern end of the beach, near the Links
- South Beach Car Park -- at the southern end, closest to the beach huts, play area, and amenity building
Both car parks are free, which is increasingly rare at popular beaches. They can fill up on warm summer weekends, so arriving before 11am is wise on the busiest days.
Best for: Free parking at both Mermaid Car Park and South Beach Car Park. Newsham station under 20 minutes from Newcastle.
The essentials: South Beach is the place to head for families -- beach huts, play area, toilets, and the surf school are all there. For a quieter walk, head north from Mermaid Car Park towards the harbour. And keep your eyes on the water -- you might just spot a seal.
