Best Playgrounds in Blyth

Ridley Park play areas, South Beach playground, and water play — best play spots in Blyth.

Blyth.live·

Blyth has a surprisingly good selection of outdoor playgrounds, anchored by the excellent Ridley Park and complemented by a newer seafront play area at South Beach. Here is a guide to the best options for families.

Ridley Park

Ridley Park is the standout. This award-winning Victorian park has two dedicated play areas -- one for younger children and toddlers with swings, a roundabout, and smaller climbing equipment, and a separate area for older children with larger climbing frames and more adventurous equipment. Both are well-maintained and set on safety surfacing, with seating nearby for parents.

The pavilion cafe is within easy reach for drinks and snacks. The park also has tennis courts, a bowling green, a basketball net, the famous Butterfly Project sculptures, and formal gardens that have won gold at Northumbria in Bloom.

Best for: Two play areas for different age groups, plus a cafe, sports courts, and the Butterfly Project sculptures. The best playground in Blyth.

Ridley Park Water Play Area

The water play area at Ridley Park is one of Blyth's biggest draws in summer. Jets, sprays, and shallow pools keep children entertained for hours on warm days, and it is completely free to use.

The water play area typically opens from late May and runs daily through the summer, from 10am to 5:30pm, weather permitting. It can get very busy on the warmest days, so earlier visits tend to be quieter. Bring towels and a change of clothes -- children will get thoroughly soaked.

Best for: Free water play open daily from late May, 10am to 5:30pm. Bring towels and spare clothes.

South Beach Play Area

The South Beach Play Area was completed in September 2022 and is a welcome addition to Blyth's seafront. Designed and installed by Wicksteed Playgrounds, it has equipment for all ages -- a toddler climbing frame, a larger junior-to-adult climbing structure, a roundabout, swings, and a buddy board. The surfacing is a mix of wetpour and turf for year-round use.

Its location right by the beach makes it easy to combine a playground visit with a walk along the coast or fish and chips from one of the nearby shops.

Best for: Newer seafront playground completed in 2022, with equipment for all ages and the beach right next door.

Estate Play Areas

Blyth Town Council maintains several smaller play areas across the town's residential estates. These are basic but serviceable for a quick runaround close to home. Check the Town Council website for a full list and locations.
