About This Event
The Northumberland Plate Festival is a three-day celebration of flat racing at Newcastle Racecourse in High Gosforth Park. The centrepiece is Saturday's Northumberland Plate, a prestigious two-mile heritage handicap carrying a prize fund of 150,000 pounds — the richest two-mile handicap in Europe. Historically known as the Pitmen's Derby, the race was once the highlight of the local miners' holiday week. The festival opens on Thursday with Seaton Delaval Trophy Day, continues on Friday evening with the Gosforth Park Cup Night and a DJ set from Ladebare, and culminates on Plate Day Saturday with top-class racing, fashion, food and live entertainment. Children aged 17 and under go free when accompanied by an adult.
