Demolition of Redundant Blyth Flats Begins to Smarten the Neighbourhood
More than 40 long-empty council flats and maisonettes at Windmill Grove are being cleared, with Northumberland County Council planning new affordable, energy-efficient homes on the site.
Work has begun to demolish more than 40 long-empty council homes at Windmill Grove in Blyth, clearing the way for new affordable housing and tidying up a corner of the town that had fallen out of use.
Best for: Demolition of the redundant flats, garages and maisonettes started the week of 5 August 2026. Northumberland County Council plans to build new affordable, energy-efficient homes on the cleared site.
Why the Flats Are Coming Down
The properties at Windmill Grove were low-demand council homes that had been standing empty for many years. Laid out with communal access and no outdoor space, they had attracted very little interest from would-be tenants, leaving the block redundant and in need of attention.
Rather than keep pouring resources into homes that few people wanted to live in, Northumberland County Council has opted to clear the site and start again. Alongside the flats and maisonettes, a number of garages are also being removed as part of the works.
What Comes Next
The council intends to replace the demolished homes with new affordable housing designed for modern living. Councillor Colin Horncastle, the council's Cabinet Member responsible for Housing, said the ambition for the site is "to build new, affordable, energy efficient homes in a variety of styles and sizes that we know local people want."
He added that the council has "been working extremely hard to provide more affordable housing, of the right type in the right place across the county." Funding options for the new homes are still being explored, so a start date for construction has not yet been confirmed.
What It Means for Blyth
For residents nearby, the immediate benefit is a tidier, safer neighbourhood, with a long-standing empty block finally cleared. In the longer term, the scheme adds to a wider push to bring more good-quality, energy-efficient housing to the town, sitting alongside the town-centre regeneration reshaping Blyth's Market Place.
